The Aupair Tag

by - September 17, 2015

Hi Friends!

"Oh are you going back to school, or do you have a job lined up?"
"No I'm actually moving to Wales to be an Au Pair."

If I had a dollar for every time that I've had that conversation with someone over the past month, I would be able to actually afford to live in my own flat in London.

Many of you know that in just over a week (8 days to be exact)  I am moving from Ottawa to Wales for an entire year, to explore Europe, and enrich myself in new cultures, all while working as an Au Pair.
I have talked about going a lot in the past few months, whether it has been on this blog, or any of my other social media platforms. But I have yet to actually go into detail about what I will be doing, and who I will be working for. All the details  I would want to know if I was reading someone else's blog who was doing the same thing that I am. I mean obviously I'm not about to give you my new address or my host parents social insurance numbers but I did think it would be cool to do the "Au Pair Tag" and give you guys a bit more insight about where I will be at in a weeks time.

I have sort of made my own list of questions for this tag, since a lot of the ones I have seen have been in different languages and I unfortunately don't speak anything other than English.
If anyone reading this is also going to be a new au pair and you have some sort of blog, please don't hesitate to do this tag, and let me know if you have because I would be delighted to read it!

Alrighty, now that's sorted, let's get on with the tag!

1. What is your name, age and where are you from?
My name is Spenser, I am 21, and I'm from a small town in Canada.

2. Where are you going to be an au pair?
I am going to be au pairing in a small village in North Wales. I'll be pretty close to bigger cities like Liverpool and Manchester.

3. How many kids are you looking after? What are their ages?
While my host family technically has four children, I am only looking after two of them. Their ages are 3 and 6. But the older two are 8 months and 15.

4. What are you most excited about for your au pair year?
Obviously I like kids a lot and I am excited to be able to become an honorary family member to my host family, however I think I am most excited for the travelling I will do in this upcoming year. I am so excited to enrich myself with different cultures from all around Europe, and I will try to see as much of not only the UK but other parts of Europe as I can!

5. What makes you nervous about being an au pair?
The thing that makes me the most nervous is that the kids aren't going to like me, or that they will take a long time to warm up to me and I'll feel like I'm living in a strangers home, walking on egg shells for the whole year.

6. What will you miss most about your home country?
Obviously I will miss my parents and my friends (and my doggie) but I will also miss some Canadian foods (poutine obvs), and North American stores (like Bath and Body Works, oh man, I have already had to talk myself out of buying the new fall scented candles and just bringing them with me).

7. Is there anything you won't miss about your home country?
I will not miss winter. AT ALL. I am so ready for the UK's milder, albeit damper, winters. I would rather be a little cold and damp, than not be able to go outside for more than 10 minutes for fear I may actually get frost bite. Definitely won't be crying over missing winter.

8. Why did you choose to be an au pair?
Really I just needed a change of pace. I'm done with school, and I'm not ready to start working for the rest of my life, so I thought why not. It's the perfect way to travel, and meet new people. And I love children (hoping I still will after this year), and I have always wanted to be a big sister. This seemed like the perfect way to do it!

That's it, that's all of the questions I could come up with! I hope you guys enjoyed and I'll be speaking with you soon :)

Much love,
Spenser xx
